Play Pieces: August

So here's what has been happening throughout August at the Shop of Possibilities and out and about with the Play Local sessions. We managed to catch some of the more wet and windy days but the children still came out to play!

A shop within the Shop. The products were a bit expensive though...

Dressing up with (in)appropriately branded attire!

Spoon as antenna.

Outside of the Shop of Possibilities, children on all of the other four estates have been building with artist Laura Carle:

Giant den here...

Spies on Sceaux Gardens

Over the last two weeks some suspicious sightings of spies have been witnessed by the children at the Shop of Possibilities...

They conducted interviews with the children trying to collect information and evidence...

And they interviewed the cyborgs too...

I have a sneaky suspicion that they may be back this Saturday... Do you remember the secret knock?

The culmination of this project by differencEngine will take place on Saturday 31 August during the Sceaux Gardens estate Summer Fayre.

Laura Carle: MakingThings

On Saturday children from Southampton Way and Sceaux Gardens estates were invited to join artist Laura Carle in a spot of den building. Here's what they got up to in the four hours we were there:

Using a drill for the first time.

Making triangles.

Working on a self initiated project.

Laura Carle: Building Structures

Artist Laura Carle spent Saturdays on Elmington estate working with children building giant structures. The playground itself was used as work bench, support structure and ladder, and the created structures sometimes were attached to the playground and were sometimes freestanding.

The interesting thing about this project is the way the structures developed across the four weeks. Many of the children took part in all the workshops therefore gaining a real sense of ownership over the design process, sometimes even sketching out the idea they wanted to make first.
