Laura Carle: MakingThings

On Saturday children from Southampton Way and Sceaux Gardens estates were invited to join artist Laura Carle in a spot of den building. Here's what they got up to in the four hours we were there:

Using a drill for the first time.

Making triangles.

Working on a self initiated project.

Team work!

Making a name out of wood.

Learning to use a saw.

The inside of the den.

Still adding sections.

Using the den.

Lots of different ways in and out.

Hello!

The finished den.

It was quite fascinating watching all the different reactions to the equipment and materials, some children were super confident and got stuck in straight away. Others were slightly more hesitant but with a little support and a guidance in how to use the tools they very quickly caught the making bug! It was lovely to see all the children building things on their own or in small groups but all with the idea of adding their piece to the collective structure when they had finished.

Laura will be back with the Play Local team this Saturday 10 August on Pelican estate. If you want to join us meet at the big playground between 12-4pm. Contact jack@southlondongallery.org for more information.
