This week, the Welcome to Iraq exhibition finished at the South London Gallery, and during the de-installation process we were given a selection of furniture which was going spare. We decided to imitate the tea area which had been set up during the show, by relocating the furniture to outside of the Shop of Possibilities, setting up a selection of chairs around a coffee table and we stocked up on juice and grapes. Then we waited for the children to arrive...
We began with just one...
We began with just one...
But then the table quickly filled up...
We ate all the grapes...
And all took part in a group rainbow loom making session...
Well, apart from one of us...
Jack got a bit chilly so thought the table cloth would make a good blanket...
But it was a bit tricky to run around in...
So some other children found a better use for it...
At the end of the session, the chairs got used for audience to watch a performance that some of the children had been working on...
It's a lot of fun to introduce new things into the Shop of Possibilities, and even better when there are enough of them to really make an impact. All the children wanted to sit around the table, and quite a few passers by seemed to be interested in what was happening too. It was a very civilized way to begin an after school play session and set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. We'll be sure to post what happens to all the furniture once the children get bored of using it how it is meant to be used!
