Building Houses

The Shop of Possibilities became a construction site as the children took to building houses in the space. Using trusty cardboard to make the outer shell, two fabulous structures emerged over the course of the two sessions.

Unfortunately after only a day one of the houses got destroyed, so the children set about making another one to replace it.

Then some of the other children wanted to make their own house over the other side of the space and the battle of the houses commenced...

Different Ways of Playing with a Tyre

Apparently a lot can be done using old car tyres and we have loads of photos and videos to share today to prove it. For that reason I won't say too much and let them speak for themselves. Enjoy!

Exploring Objects

An interesting thing happened at the beginning of one of our sessions at the Shop of Possibilities, whilst subtle, I was really intrigued by what was happening in front of me. The furniture in the space had been moved around so that our tables and chairs were now right in front of the door as you come in to the space. Whether this influenced the child's decision, I don't know, but I'd guess that because things weren't quite 'normal' when Junior arrived that this may have offered him some permission to play with the furniture which is normally just furniture.

First Junior climbs onto the table and starts to lift the chairs and place them onto the table.

He keeps going with this, one by one, until he almost has a full row.

Then rather than getting down and walking round to the other side, he finds a way to climb over the chairs to reach the ones which remain on the floor.

Success! So he carries on with the next row, realising he has a little less space to move around in now.

But he still finds a way to carefully move around them without him or the chairs falling off.

He climbs down once he has filled all the space up.

But realises there is one chair left...

After he's worked out what to do with that, he starts to climb again.

And then looks pretty pleased with himself for a while!

He soon went on to find something else to do, but I was really pleased to capture this little moment on camera and thought it was quite appropriate that this all unfolded in front of the 'curious' sign on the wall. Sometimes the small moments can reveal a lot and this seemed to me like Junior was, through quite logical, repetitive actions, exploring what these objects were, what they could do, how they might fit together and how he might fit with them.

Tie. Climb. Swing. Fall.

The Play Local team headed to Pelican estate for another afternoon of playful playground interventions.

The swings became the site the children wanted to manipulate, so with some additions of rope and netting they began to play around and construct a rope swing which they could use to swing from the bucket swing to the ground.

Jumping off without the rope swing...

Getting the rope to the right height...

Mixed successes...

...and a few falls!

Once tried and tested some of the other children begin to take turns...

Chairs and Tape

A lovely little play project for you to enjoy on the blog today. Super simple, but it looks great and was lots of fun for the children that got involved in decorating the chair with multicoloured electrical tape. It was also lovely to see two children who don't know each other very well playing together.

The chair did look much more exciting once they'd finished with it!

Welcome To...

This week, the Welcome to Iraq exhibition finished at the South London Gallery, and during the de-installation process we were given a selection of furniture which was going spare. We decided to imitate the tea area which had been set up during the show, by relocating the furniture to outside of the Shop of Possibilities, setting up a selection of chairs around a coffee table and we stocked up on juice and grapes. Then we waited for the children to arrive...

We began with just one...

But then the table quickly filled up...

We ate all the grapes...

And all took part in a group rainbow loom making session...

Well, apart from one of us...

Jack got a bit chilly so thought the table cloth would make a good blanket...

But it was a bit tricky to run around in...

So some other children found a better use for it...

At the end of the session, the chairs got used for audience to watch a performance that some of the children had been working on...

It's a lot of fun to introduce new things into the Shop of Possibilities, and even better when there are enough of them to really make an impact. All the children wanted to sit around the table, and quite a few passers by seemed to be interested in what was happening too. It was a very civilized way to begin an after school play session and set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. We'll be sure to post what happens to all the furniture once the children get bored of using it how it is meant to be used!
